Re: Machine Code Generation

I am evaluating PowerGen using the 30-day trial product.  There is a note in the ECrane web site (Support & Tips , PowerGen Tips) called "Machine Code Generation" dated 4/16/99 that suggests that PowerGen cannot reliably build an application as an Exe with Dll's.  Is this (still) true?  Machine code builds are an absolute requirement for us.

Re: Machine Code Generation

PowerGen should generate machine code deliverables as well as PowerBuilder.  The point of the caveat is that machine code generation has not proven to offer many benefits and the costs are extraordinarily long build times, build and run-time environments that are not as robust and larger deliverables.

One compromise feature we have added to PowerGen is the ability to build your application specifying some deliverables as PBDs and others as DLLs.  This allows you to target those PBLs that might benefit from machine code.

I would highly recommend that you perfrom a careful comparison between p-code and machine code deliverables.  In our experience it is very rare that the troubles with machine code are worth it.

Phil
